The group will need to be multipurpose or ACL-only.
The database itself does not need to include the group on its ACL. Long story, but group access to a doc isn't predicated on the group having access to the DB -- it's just that the person needs some access to the DB, but doesn't matter about the group. If you have manager access, you'd gain the ability to view the doc.
You have a view that displays readers, right? Make a copy and put brackets around the readers so you can see whether there are blanks around the "Admin" entry, or if the "Admin" entry is longer or shorter than it looks in the view. Newlines are a particular problem. Many nonprinting characters, they'd have to be punched directly into the group name to force the group to resolve.
The server caches your group membership, but it tends to update pretty well. The quickest way to shortcut the delay here (a few minutes) is to quit & restart Notes.
